Organic labels have several connotations attached, which is mainly a guarantee for a healthy food. On the negative side organic produce is usually more expensive and this has people questioning if it is really worth the cost. Is there really that much difference in the quality of the fruit? Does it taste different and is there a difference to the nutritional value that you get?

Scientific proof that Organic is better

Fortunately many of these questions have already been asked by researchers who have conducted studies to find the answers. In 2014 a study conducted at Newcastle University in England reviewed 343 peer-reviewed scientific studies to determine if organic is really better. With so many people in the food industry airing their doubts, they wanted to see what science had to say.

Professor Carlo Leifert who led the study team commented: “This study demonstrates that choosing food produced according to organic standards can lead to increased intake of nutritionally desirable antioxidants and reduced exposure to toxic heavy metals. This constitutes an important addition to the information currently available to consumers which until now has been confusing and in many cases is conflicting.”

Benefits of Organic Blueberries

The study highlighted what many health conscious people already believe – that organic produce offers several distinct advantages over conventional produce. In the case of blueberries where they are prone to absorption of chemical residues this is particularly important.

Organic fruits have higher nutrient densities and anti-oxidant concentrations

According to the Newcastle University study, it was determined that organic produce contained between 18 and 69% more antioxidant concentrations (depending on the food types and other variables) than conventionally grown produce. This was particularly relevant to fruits like blueberries that contain high concentrations of polyphenols and anthocyanins. This indicates that organic blueberries have significantly higher nutrient densities than conventional blueberries.

Organic produce is more effective for dietary treatment of chronic conditions

It must be remembered that it is the nutrients in fruits such as blueberries that provide health benefits and when those nutrients occur in higher concentrations then they can have a greater positive impact on health. Nutrition is increasingly being studied as a treatment protocol against chronic conditions including neurodegenerative diseases, cancer and cardiovascular diseases and organic can play an important role in this.

Organic fruit tastes better

In a study conducted in 2006, sensory taste tests were run across a broad spectrum of organic and non organic products. It was found that there was a distinct difference in the taste of organic orange juice, but not much difference in organic milk. Consumers will probably tell you that they don’t need a scientific study to confirm the taste difference. Fruits that have a chemical residue from pesticides do have a different taste. As Natureland sells only organically grown blueberries, and we also only use them to make Natureland blueberry super juice, you can be sure to buy a product of excellent taste.

Organic blueberries are free from toxins and harmful pesticide residues

The study from Newcastle University also highlighted that conventionally grown produce contained more than four times the chemical residues even after being washed than organic produce. These residues includes toxic metals such as Cadmium (Cd).

Natureland takes great care to ensure that all our blueberries used for juicing or sold as fresh fruits are organic and free from pesticide contamination. Try it for yourself and experience the delicious taste, full of flavor and nutrition!
